The rain has finally arrived in the Bay Area, and with it the loss of the 49ers. Dang. I could go on and on about the 2nd year Williams, and his two errors, but he has enough to deal with without me harassing him. Poor kid. The Niners got farther than any of us fans expected they would this year, so for that I salute you.

It still sucks though.

And therefore I bring you tonight's show: Stormy Monday.

I was raised by a father well versed in the genre of Blues. It was often playing in the garage when my dad was working on his old cars. We even had a jukebox, packed with 45s, many of which featured old blues. I've MCd the Northern California Blues Festival a few times, and have quite a large collection of great blues musicians, past and present.

Shareef Ali is in the studio in the first hour. He's promoting a show this Wednesday at Bottom of the Hill.

Following this fine interview I'm focusing on a tribute to the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It's all about the preparation. I often times pull too much music, which is good. I'd rather do that than not pull enough. I don't time my show down to the second, but I always have a good sense of what should follow what. Radio is a craft; an art form. They say it takes twenty years to become a master. I've been doing radio since 1988; DJing since 1986. I don't feel I'm a master in any way, but I really do love practicing my art every week. I'm blessed.

What a great show tonight. And once again, I kicked Ron's ass. Seriously Ron, you really can't play crappy audience recordings and actually think you're going to win?

We were blessed with some special guests in the studio tonight. In the 7 o'clock hour Ralph Spight of Victim's Family and Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine came by to talk about this Sunday's San Francisco Rock Project benefit at Rickshaw Shop. Zeda, a ten year old bassist, and Cody a fifteen year old guitarist joined him to talk about the show. Check out their website for more info. This is a really excellent cause.

Around 9:30 the greatest guitarist you've never heard of, Eric McFadden came in to talk about his new sauce he's been cooking up. Actually, he was talking about a lot of things, including waffles and an apple pie that one first place at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's always such a pleasure to see Eric and Super D. They're on the road so often that one wonders how they feel when they actually have time to relax.

I've always held a special place in my heart for 1971. I wasn't born in that year. I was born in 1970, but the music from '71 was simply amazing in so many ways. It was that year that we begin to see the emergence of many genres: R&B, Soul, Blues, and Jazz had already been around for a while, but now more genres of Rock n' Roll begin to emerge. This is not your father's Rock n' Roll. Funk, psychedelic, progressive, and ambient genres begin to really showcase themselves at this time. And of course, some truly classic albums (remember albums?) that the classic rock radio stations play too much of, were released that year.

Per usual I'll be hosting United Educators of San Francisco's and SFUSD Social Studies teacher Ken Tray on my show. We'll be talking about the ballot initiatives as well as the hotly contested mayors race (when isn't it hotly contested in this town?), sheriff's race and DA's race.

What a great birthday weekend! I spent a fabulous evening with my lady and my darling daughter, then off to Chicken John's book release party. That's always a family reunion. Saturday and Sunday found me dancing it up at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. I love this town. Some great music. Dr. John, Irma Thomas, The Flatlanders, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson, The Mother Hips, Hot Buttered Rum, and Dark Star Orchestra, to name abut a few great acts.

In the midst of enjoying the opening Help->Slip->Music from DSO, I jumped in the air just to come down oddly on my left leg and hyperextend my knee. I've done this before, but this time I saw stars. Dang. I kept on dancing though. Thanks to alcohol, I didn't feel a thing. Today is another story.

I almost didn't do my show, but I was too amped to stay away. A great set follows.

The friend I was walking down the alley happens to be with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), who were in town two weeks ago for their annual education summit, which brings in about 1400 educators from around the nation. I’m a teacher, and I used to teach in a NAF academy. I believe strongly in the need for education reform. I walk the walk. During the conference I had the pleasure of sitting down with some NAF alumni as well as some current 12 graders to discuss how NAF has benefited them. I’ll be playing the interview tonight. Songwriters Unplugged is a weekly show, that features a set from three local singer/songwriters. It's a great way for a great venue to support local talent. Radio Valencia then plays the recorded performance on the following Saturday, 4-6pm. Tune in, you'll be glad you did.

I co-created Radio Valencia to support local people doing great things for the community. Tonight on the show I interviewed two people who are indeed doing something great, relevant, and desperately needed in our great city by the bay. Shawn O'Shey and Olivia Heart joined me tonight to talk about the Castro Country Club. The CCC is a clean & sober gathering place for all people and a home for the queer recovery community.

They endeavor to be a space where all can seek wisdom, serenity, courage and joy.

Since April 1983, the Castro Country Club has been a safe haven for LGBT people in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Now, the building that has been home to the Castro Country Club for nearly three decades is being sold.

Once again it's the night that I show little Rotten Ronnie Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Posters who the real Rock Star is. Me!

Rock Fight 6 runs twice a year: December and June. For four hours Ron and I bombast each other with glorious live bootleg material, both of are avid collectors of. We're a bit obsessed.

I've destroyed Ron the last five times. The show starts at 6, and at the moment it's 5:55 and he's not even here yet. He's been late before; up to an hour, once. It's a sure bet that Ron won't be in his groove until the third hour. Unless of course, if he's drunk, which is what happened in Rock Fight 5. You can hear Rock Fight 5 by going here. Listen to the second half of the show the get an idea of what I mean.

Ok, he showed up at 6:04. Let's get it on!

The plan for tonight is for each of us to play a live cut, one after the other. We try to one-up the other. We're also going to do "Rock Blocks", which will consist of each co-host to do a 20 minute block of music of his choice. We do two blocks each.

It's that time of year once again: the time to get out your #2 pencils and vote for your favorites in the 37th annual San Francisco Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay.

It's the issue we all love. It's the issue we hold onto the longest. It's the one that we get angry at our six year old's for using as liner for their hamster cages.

This year I want you to do something very, VERY important. I want you to vote Radio Valencia as the Best Radio Station in the Bay Area. Truth be told, we are the best radio station in the bay area. Don't believe me? Have you even taken a listen to us yet? We are without a doubt, the BEST RADIO STATION IN THE BAY AREA!

I've been doing non-commercial (and a small amount of commercial) radio in the Bay Area since 1988. The best radio is radio that takes chances. Radio Valencia takes chances when it comes to content and programming. We have the best, most eclectic and relevant music programming, and the most interesting interviews.

Update: I went to the Tuesday night Melvins show at the Great American Music Hall. They opened with Bullhead. Boris was beyond glorious. After a 20+ minute break they returned with a blistering performance of Stoner Witch. If you BitTorrent then I encourage you to DL the Bullhead performance. This is an amazing audience recording, that could be a soundboard.

KFJC: Doin' It To Death, the Annual 24 Hour James Brown Birthday Special

As many of you are aware, I spent nine glorious years on the air at KFJC; 88-97, as The Reverend Dah Wave. I started there fresh out of high school, at the age of 18, with rough idea of what "eclectic" meant. Actually, at that time, KFJC was known as an "alternative" station. Then Nirvana had to go and get famous, and "alternative" ended up meaning "crap". By the time I left in 1997, I was very well schooled in the finer points of quality music. I also learned that there was no way in hell I would ever work for a commercial radio station. Radio is an art form, and one to be taken seriously, even when you're having a goofy time playing Frank Sinatra back to back with Megadeth.

After James Brown died on Christmas, 2006, Spliff Skankin' of KFJC's Jah's Music organized the first James Brown celebration. I jumped at the chance. Now the special happens around his birthday (May 1st). The month of May in KFJC-land is known as Mayhem. It's a month full of specials. I once hosted a 15 1/2 hour Miles Davis special. I also co-hosted, along with Kevin Odante, and the late-great Spiderman a Curtis Mayfield, Jerry "the Iceman" Butler, and the Impressions special.

All Mayhem long there are some great specials, including a Captain Beefheart special coming up.

If you’re like me, and I know you are, then you love a fine night of stage performance in an intimate setting. Luckily for you San Francisco offers many fine places to indulge in this fetish. You naughty radio listener, you. Anyway, the Mission District has without a doubt, the BEST place to see a stage play, or a bad movie: The Dark Room Theater. Located at 2263 Mission St., between 18th and 19th streets. The Dark Room has been around since 2005, hosting adapted stage performances of classic films such as: The Shining, Caddyshack, Life of Brian, Star Wars, the Ten Commandments (I was the voice of God), many Twilight Zone episodes, original plays like Emperor Norton and Zippy the Pinhead, as well as Sunday nights Bad Movie Night, which features a movie and commentary from three “talented” hosts with mics, but also encourages audience participation. Think MST3K, but way better. They host many sketch comedy groups, as well as stand up comedy too. I love this place. We are so lucky to have The Dark Room in SF.

We had a 3.2 earthquake in the Bay Area today. I heard it coming before I felt it. Crazy. I was on the 32nd floor of Embarcadero 1 when the 1989 earthquake hit. We were waving to the Bank of America building, and it was waving back. I worked at KRQR (The Rocker) then. It became Alice 97.3FM. Both station pretty much sucked. My quake story is a humorous on though. Perhaps I'll share it sometime. Not tonight though.

A Season in Hell #32: Radio Valencia: All Dogs Go To Heaven

Growing up I always had dogs. My first dog, Duchess, was a short poodle. Looking back, she wasn't very attractive, and I'm certain she died before I turned five. I have memories of her, near her demise, peeing on herself, and standing in the middle of the street, not moving, as cars drove around her. Not happy.

My second dog was a black Cocker Spaniel, Brandy. In 1976 We were living in Greensboro, NC, and our neighbors dogs had beautiful puppies. My sister Tracy spent the whole summer at their house, around their pool, playing the puppies. There was one she loved that she called Muffin. She wanted Muffin, but we didn't want the name. Instead we named him Brandy. Brandy was mean. Can you even imagine a mean Cocker? He bit me in my six year old balls. I don't think they had even dropped yet, but it still wasn't pleasurable. By 1978 we were living back in Toledo, Ohio, my birthplace. My dad used to use Brandy as a guard dog. I swear that was the meanest dog I have ever known. Really. Meaner than a trained Pitbull Brandy was hit by a car on his third birthday and died. Done.

My next dog of note, and truly the best dog of my life was also a Cocker Spaniel. A buff-colored Cocker named Oliver. He was a great dog. My dad Harvey worked as a fine jewelery supervisor throughout southern Michigan in the late 70's/early 80's. We were still living in Toledo. On one of his rounds he stopped by a farm and found a bunch of Cocker puppies running after him. The one leading the charge was a sweet, squishy-faced Oliver. My dad knew right then and there that Oliver was meant to be ours.

Dad drove home to Toledo with Oliver on his lap the entire way. I had just joined Pop Warner football, and was playing in my uniform, in the backyard of our house. We had a huge backyard, which many of these houses had. I was called to come out front by my mom, Patricia. I knew my dad was due home around then, and I was excited for him to see me in my uniform. Arriving at the front door, I saw my sisters out front playing on the lawn with something I couldn't make out. I walked out to them, and then I saw him: little Oliver Fuzzy Butt (as he came to be known). Seriously, the sweetest, most wonderful dog we could ever had imagined.

For the next 17 years, Oliver would be the dog that would just hang with you. Not a dog to get in the car and follow you to work, Oliver was the dog that waited for you when you got home. He was happy to go on a walk, happy to sit by your feet or on your lap. Happy to lay at the foot of the bed, hogging most of the feet area. He was always there with lots of love to give. We had songs we would sing to him, and plenty of play time. He was more than a pet, he was a member of the family.

He followed us from Toledo, to Southern California, to Northern California. Seven moves in his 17 years. When he passed away, he was well into his 17th year. His age and frailty was obvious. It was so hard to lose him, but the time was evident. I haven't had a dog since. That was in 1996. I hope to have another dog some day, and I hope they'll give me as much joy as Oliver gave us.

Recently a true brother (from another mother) of mine, Sam, lost his beloved Mojo. At a young and frisky nine years old, Mojo was diagnosed with Cancer. It was all over his body, and Sam knew that there was no saving him. The sadness was too much. We had a wake for him last week, and the next day Sam took sweet Mojo to the beach one last time (Mojo spent a lot of time at the beach, watching Sam surf). Following this Sam took him to be put down. the sadness is almost too much to bear.

Tonight I dedicate the 8pm hour to our dear-departed Mojo. He was such a beautiful, sweet and loving dog. I asked friends to request their favorite dog-songs. I think you'll enjoy this too. Especially if you've ever had a dog, or know the love that humans-best-friend can offer.

I've been a fan of John Zorn since about 1994, when the first Masada recording came out, Aleph. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing him twice in concert, in SF; once with Masada in 1996, and once with Electric Masada in 2009. At the Yoshi's show in 2009, I sat at the stage with Zorn directly within reach. He sweat on me. I have yet to wash.

Anyway, if you're not familiar with the works of John Zorn, you should be warned. Zorn ranges from the stripped down, straight-ahead jazz combo-stylings, to the most avant garde. This show will showcase many different Zorn groups. The first hour is a smattering of all things Zorn. I missed my show last week, because I was up in the snow. A lot of snow too. I didn't move my car for two full days, and it had about three feet of snow covering it when I left. Lots of snow. Went sledding too, with the little one.

Anyway, I thought a great way to make up for my absence would be to do a three hour Best of... show. So I did a five hour show. Feast from FCCFreeRadio came over for a little while, as did KROB. We played a lot of fine 2010 music in the first two hours, before jumping to some great live shows from 2010. The last two hours included some fine ditties I picked up this year; all of them live. The show ends with two amazing live cuts: Zeppelin and the Dead.

Here on the moment that I enter the fourth decade of my life I find that it's music that has always been by my side. And not just any music either. Too many people rely on the commercial classic rock, R&B, jazz, whatever-crap-they're-force-feeding-your-brain FM/AM radio drivel, and they don't take a chance on true quality music from any genre. I love all genres, but I've been schooled in the finer arts of non-commercial radio, which means that I will not settle for what the commercial stations and major labels tell me is quality.

I just found this fabulous 1976 Gospel/Funk gem tonight. I searched and found it for sale online for almost $80 US dollars, used. On this, the minutes before I turn 40, I offer it as a gift to you, my friends. Enjoy.

9 Mile Bike Ride Through the Presidio

Wow, I've owned my Rockhopper for about 10 years, maybe more, but today Catherine and I went on the best, and most tiring ride of my life. She lives in the Haight, so we took off from there, through the Panhandle, up Arguello, into the Presidio, to Lincoln, to Baker Beach, where we took a bit of a break. Then down the hill, through Sea Cliff (past Robin Williams' house), past the Palace of the Legion of Honor, past the Cliff House, and down to the Park Chalet for a well-deserved burger. After that it was through Golden Gate Park on back to the homestead.

Damn if my body didn't earn this rest. That was awesome. I took some hills well, took a few more breaks than expected, but overall happily surprised myself.

Just one more reason I love this women. We keep pushing each other to do the best things life has to offer. Thanks baby.

Tonight's guest, Kevin Pina is an American journalist and filmmaker. He is known for his reporting that focused on human rights abuses in Haiti following the ouster of Jean-Bertrand Aristide on February 29, 2004 and the installation of the interim government of Gerard Latortue and Boniface Alexandre in March 2004. Pina reported on events in Haiti from 2003-2006 as a Special Correspondent for the radio program, Flashpoints,

heard on KPFA - the flagship station of Pacifica Radio based in Berkeley, California. Pina is also the Founding Editor of the Haiti Information Project (HIP), a non-profit news agency based in Port-au-Prince and Northern California, and an Associate Editor for the Black Commentator, an online magazine.

This promises to be a hard-hitting discussion.

It's been a while, but I'm back on the "air".

Since my departure from FCCFreeRadio last March, I've been involved in creating a new and very much improved, radio station in SF, Radio Valencia.

A Season in Hell, Monday's 8-10pm.

My old friend Chicken John, whom I have done many shows since 1995, including Church of the Bleeding Ulcer, You Asked for it, Lost Vegas, and the Power Tool Drag Races, asked me to help him set up a true community radio station. It didn't take me two seconds to jump at the opportunity.

After consulting with some roustabouts, that included Trademark G. of Evolution Control Committee, and Wrybread of Photoboof, it was decided that we can make this happen.

That was in April.

Today we flipped the switch!!!

We have 30 people on staff, and 24 two-hour weekly shows, featuring some of the best SF has to offer, including the Ask Dr. Hal Show, KROB, Drinks with Tony, and The Sound of Plaid (ECC), just to name but a few.

I've been involved in bay area radio since 1988, and micro-powered radio since I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man back in 1994. I have not been this excited about a radio station since I witnessed the immediate response RFBM would get from that community.

I truly believe that Radio Valencia has the power to drive the community as the bulletin board with the megaphone, all neighborhoods deserve to have.

At this moment the website is a shambles and the board looks like it's had one too many beers spilled on it, but that's what I love about community. Everyone is coming together to make this thing happen. In time the website will kick ass, we'll have a new board, and other flashy bells and whistles a radio station needs to rock.

At least the automated playlist which plays when there is no live show, doesn't suck.

A station with no meetings? A station with no mandated promos to play? A station where the DJs are encouraged to create art two hours a week, with no interruption? A station that is actively searching for inspired people to come and play with us, no strings attached? A station that hopes to inspire a community? That's my kind of station. Sign me up!

Blackhawks Win!!!!

The only sport I really care about is ice hockey. It must have something to do with my late maternal grandfather, Chuck Workman; a Canadian, a WWII vet, and a hockey player. I was born in Toledo, Ohio, and for some reason I never cared for the Detroit Red Wings. My dad used to race stock cars their, where he had a lot of fun. He and I are very close, so you would think I would be a Red Wings fan, but no, I'm a Blackhawks fan. Maybe it's the jersey. Tonight marks only their fourth Stanley Cup Championship, and their first since 1961.

My sister, Julie, bought me a jersey about 20 years ago. I've loved wearing it, and take pride when I do.

When the San Jose Sharks came to the Bay Area, I got very excited. Having lived in the Bay Area since late 1982, I was long waiting an NHL team. Today, it's safe to say I'm a fan of both teams. It was hard to see the Sharks go down to the Hawks, in four games, in the Western Conference Finals this year. But if they were to go down to any team, it had to be the Blackhawks.

Congratulations Chicago Blackhawks on a great season, and a great second season (any hocky fan knows that the playoffs (the "second season") is when the real hockey season begins.

I'll savior this moment, and hope it's not another 49 years before they win it again.

I've been fired from the best radio stations. Er, I mean, no I haven't.
